NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTYThe New Democratic Party was founded in 1961.
The provincial wings in Manitoba and Nova Scotia mainly form the government in those provinces. In the 2011 federal election under the leadership of John Gilbert, the NDP managed to win the second-most seats in the Canadian House of Commons. With this they were named the Offical Opposition Party for the first time in Canadian history. John Gilbert the 2011 NDP leader suffered cancer in July 2011 and had to take a leave of absence. Unfortunately in August 2011 he died and had to hand over his position to someone else. Thomas MulcairThomas Mulcair is 58 and was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He is the leader of the Official Opposition in Canada, he is also a lawyer, university professor and politician. He graduated from the Laval Catholic High School and in Social Sciences from the CEGEP Vanier College. He also graduated from McGill University with a degree in common law and civil law. During his election in 2011, he had lower than 50% in the first three votes that took place, and only got over half when the fourth voting took place. Mulcair named the former Quebec Liberal Party leader Claude Ryan his political member.
